About The Uproot Environmental Justice Fellowship:
The Environmental Justice Fellowship, a program by The Uproot Project, is offering funding to support seven journalists in carrying out year-long reporting projects. Each fellow will receive up to $2,000 to cover travel and other reporting expenses.
Additionally, Uproot will provide assistance in submitting their stories to media outlets upon request. The focus of these projects should center on environmental justice, shedding light on how the climate crisis and other significant environmental issues are interconnected with various forms of inequality.
The Uproot Project Environmental Eligibility:
Eligibility for The Uproot Project’s Environmental Justice Fellowship is open to all journalists of color who are members of The Uproot Project. For journalists of color not yet part of Uproot, membership applications are available and free to join.
Applicants must be actively working journalists, with those in public relations, lobbying, or communications roles not eligible for this scholarship. Freelance journalists are encouraged to apply, with a demonstrated history of environmental coverage strengthening their applications.
Reporting projects funded through The Uproot Project’s Environmental Justice Fellowship should delve deeply into environmental justice issues. Preference will be given to stories that are underreported in the media or not well understood by the general public.
The grant supports stories in any medium, including written, audio, video, photography, or a combination thereof. Fellows will be required to provide a progress report after six months and a summary of their experiences at the end of the reporting period for Uproot to share.
Funding provided by The Uproot Project’s Environmental Justice Fellowship is intended to directly support reporting efforts. This may include travel expenses, translation costs, access to registries, data analysis, and data visualization.
The majority of funds must be allocated to reporting expenses and used within one year of scholarship selection. While equipment purchases are generally not permitted, exceptions may be considered by the jury in special cases.
Applications for the 2024 Environmental Justice Fellowship are now open, with the deadline set for 11:59 PM ET on March 1, 2024.
